The brushwork in the background is light and hazy, like a memory. It gives the entire scene a floating, dreamlike ambiguity. There is no hard line between the spiritual and the physical, the erotic and the absurd. Every character in the painting is engaged in a quiet ritual: the woman holds herself, a gesture of awareness; the white rat seeks or observes, perhaps sensing what lies within. The smoking figure and the bottle-bearing rat serve as counterpoints — symbols of distraction, burden, and forgotten paths.
