In this concrete sculpture, a weight-bearing figure supports a hybrid pillar that transitions from the carved stone of an ancient Indian temple base to the unfinished, raw concrete of a modern-day structure with iron rods protruding from the top. The figure’s posture, carrying the heavy burden of the pillar on its head, draws from temple iconography, where such figures are traditionally depicted as eternally supporting divine structures. Here, however, the pillar extends into a modern form, suggesting that the role of the laboring class remains unchanged despite the shift in architectural style and societal progress.
