Red sprites are massive and brief electrical discharges that occur high above thunderstorms, reaching up to 80 km in altitude. Unlike regular lightning that travels downward, sprites shoot upward into the atmosphere and appear as a short reddish glow, often with tendrils or a jellyfish-like shape. They are a type of Transient Luminous Event (TLE). They are difficult to see from the ground because clouds hide them, but they can be captured on camera and observed from space.
