| Artist Description | I chose the theme “Struggle for Existence – The Human and the Earth” to express the deep crisis and emotional tension between human life and the natural world. In today’s time, rapid industrialization, deforestation, and material greed have created an imbalance that threatens both humanity and the planet. Through this sculpture, the artist aims to remind people that our survival is inseparable from the Earth’s well-being. The choice of wood as a primary material reflects nature’s strength and suffering, while the fragile human forms symbolize human vulnerability and endurance. The artist wanted to capture the silent pain, hope, and responsibility that connect humans to their environment. This topic allows the artist to explore philosophical questions of existence — how life persists amidst destruction, how hope rises from decay, and how creation and destruction coexist within the same cycle. It also serves as a visual warning and emotional appeal, urging humanity to rediscover its bond with nature before it’s too late. My work is deeply inspired by the existential fragility of Alberto Giacometti, the material experimentation of Ramkinkar Baij, and the humanistic concerns of Amar Nath Sehgal. Through mixed media sculpture, I explore the tension between human existence and the environment, reflecting themes of struggle, survival, and emotional resilience. My forms often appear distorted or elongated, symbolizing the fragile yet persistent nature of life in a rapidly changing world. Ultimately, the artist chose this theme not only as a form of protest but as a reflection of empathy and awareness — to inspire viewers to feel, question, and act. The sculpture becomes a mirror, showing that the struggle of the Earth is our own struggle for existence. Why I choose specific only this material? I chose wood, metal, and stone as mediums because each material holds a symbolic voice in expressing the theme “Struggle for Existence – The Human and the Earth.” These mediums together create a dialogue between nature, humanity, and time. Wood was chosen for its living, organic quality — it represents nature, growth, and the passage of life. Its texture carries marks of time and decay, reflecting the Earth’s suffering and resilience. Metal was included to express the human world — strength, industry, and modernization. Its cold, reflective surface contrasts sharply with the warmth of wood, symbolizing the tension between human progress and natural harmony. Stone grounds the work in permanence and history. It speaks of endurance and the unchanging spirit of the Earth, connecting the sculpture to ancient foundations of existence. By combining these materials, the artist wanted to merge the natural and the artificial, the living and the eternal, to represent how humanity and the Earth are inseparably linked in both creation and destruction. The hardness of stone and metal against the softness of wood mirrors the struggle of survival — a balance between vulnerability and strength. Ultimately, these mediums were chosen not only for their physical properties but for their symbolic power to make the sculpture a reflection of human existence, environmental consciousness, and the timeless relationship between man and nature. |
