The 27 daughters of philosopher Daksha, who was the son of Lord Brahma, were married to the ChandraDev (Moon God). These 27 daughters are known as the Nakshatra in Vedic astrology (constellations). These wives of the moon are Ashvini, Bharani, Krittika, Rohini, Mrigashirsha, Ardra, Punarvasu, Pushya, Ashlesha, Magha, PurvaPhalguni, Uttar Phalguni, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Vishakha, Anuradha, Jyeshtha, Mula, PurvaAshadha, Uttar Ashadha, Sravana, Dhanishta, Shatabhisha, PurvaBhadrapada, Uttar Bhadrapada, Revati. Chandra Dev made a promise to Daksha to treat her 27 wives with equality, love, and care. Chandra Dev, however, preferred his fourth wife, Rohini, to the rest of his 27 wives, and spent the majority of his time with her. The other 26 wives were dissatisfied with Chandra Dev's situation. When Chandra Dev disregarded her wives' advice, 26 women complained to the father that Chandra Dev was uninterested in them. Daksha cursed his son-in-law, saying that as each day passes, he will lose all of his power and succumb to tuberculosis (Kshyayrog). Chandra Dev then prayed to Lord Shiva. I sympathies with your pain, but I can't undo Daksha's curse, Shiva said Chandra Dev. With your position, I believe I can help you relax to some level. Lord Shiva told Chandra Dev that starting today, you would see a 15-day increase in brightness (Waxing moon) in Shukla Paksha and a 15-day reduction in brightness (Waning moon) in Krishna Paksha. On full moon days (Purnima), you will shine brightly, and on new moon days, you will fade away (Amavasya)
